During the latter part of the previous decade Bank Windhoek Ltd became increasingly aware of the fact that the group needed an asset management capability to not only manage the group companies’ own assets but also that of its corporate and high net-worth clients. True to the banking group’s drive to empower Namibians and to build local capacity, it was decided not to use any of the then well-known asset management companies, but to rather build a truly Namibian asset management firm managed in Windhoek by Namibians.

Initially, establishing such a local capacity was thought to be impossible. However, the bank’s management chose to follow a gradual approach to build the required capacity.  The first logical step was to manage interest bearing assets due to the high level of expertise in this area in the Bank’s Treasury Division.  As a result Capricorn Unit Trust Management Company was established in early 2000 and by the 30th of April that same year the Bank launched the highly successful ‘Bank Windhoek Selekt Fund’.
